Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 25, 2026

The Stellar Speller ("we", "us", or "our") builds personalized spelling practice for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to the practices described here.

Parent- and teacher-managed accounts

The Stellar Speller is intended to be used with adult supervision. Accounts are created and controlled by a parent, guardian, or teacher ("you"). You set up student profiles on behalf of the children you are responsible for, and you control what information is entered.

We do not knowingly allow children to create their own accounts or sign up on their own. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information without adult involvement, please contact us and we will remove it.

Information we collect

Account information. When you register, we collect your name, email address, account type (parent or teacher), U.S. state, and an account PIN you choose to protect your dashboard. We also store the role assigned to your account.

Student profiles. For each student you add, we store the first and last name, birthdate, grade level, a child PIN, difficulty setting, custom words, and (for teachers) a group name. As the student practices, we also store session history, progress, trouble words, recent words, points, and mastery counts.

Shared learning content. The app uses a shared dictionary, phonics sequences, and state standards. These are general educational materials and are not tied to a specific child's identity.

Messages you send us. If you use the in-app Contact form, we collect your name, email, an optional phone number, your message, and whether you asked for a reply.

Promo codes. If you redeem a promotional code, we record the code, your account, and the access period it grants.

Usage analytics. We collect anonymous, aggregated analytics events (for example, which features are used) to help us improve the app. These events do not include your child's name or spelling answers.

Technical data. Like most online services, we automatically receive basic device and connection information such as IP address, browser type, and timestamps needed to operate and secure the service.

How we use information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Run spelling sessions and adapt word selection to each student's level and progress.
  • Save and sync progress, points, and trouble words across devices.
  • Let teachers organize students into groups and assign weekly word lists and schedules.
  • Let a teacher invite a parent's email to view a connected student's progress, and let that parent accept or decline.
  • Send welcome emails and occasional reminders (for example, a prompt to add a speller or a periodic review nudge).
  • Process optional subscription payments and manage promo-code access.
  • Respond to messages you send through the Contact form.
  • Understand aggregate usage so we can improve the app.
  • Protect accounts, enforce our terms, and comply with legal obligations.

Connected-parent sharing

A teacher can invite a parent's email address to view a specific student's progress. When you receive and accept that invitation, your email is linked to the student profile and you may view that student's practice information. You can remove this connection at any time, and the teacher who owns the profile can revoke access at any time.

Payments

Paid subscriptions and promo-code access are optional. When you make a payment, it is processed by our payment provider, Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card number. Stripe provides us with the limited account and transaction details needed to manage your subscription.

Automated emails

We may send transactional and reminder emails to the address on your account — for example, a welcome message when you sign up, a reminder to add a speller, or a periodic review nudge. You can stop using the app or contact us to limit these messages.

How we store and protect information

Your information is stored on secure servers managed by our platform provider. Access is restricted and accounts are protected by the PINs you choose. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information using reasonable safeguards.

PINs. Your account dashboard PIN and each child's profile PIN are stored so the app can verify them when you enter them. Choose PINs that are not easy to guess and do not share them with your child.

Data retention

We keep your account and student profile information for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and its student profiles at any time from the dashboard, which removes the associated data. We may retain limited information where required for legal, accounting, or security purposes.

Your rights and choices

You can review and update your account information in the app at any time. As the adult who manages a student profile, you can edit or delete that profile, change its PIN, and control connected-parent sharing. To delete your entire account, use the delete-account option in your dashboard, or contact us and we will assist you.

You can also contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, subject to applicable law and our need to keep certain records.

We do not sell your information

We do not sell your personal information or your child's personal information to anyone. We do not use personal information to profile users for targeted advertising.

Third-party services

We rely on a small number of trusted services to operate the app:

  • Stripe — processes optional subscription payments.
  • Email delivery — sends welcome and reminder emails to your account address.
  • Analytics — provides anonymous, aggregate usage insights.
  • Cloud hosting — stores your account and student data on secure infrastructure.

These providers process information on our behalf and are bound by their own privacy and security obligations. We share only the information needed to provide the relevant function.

Children's privacy

The Stellar Speller is designed for use by children only under the management of a parent, guardian, or teacher. Adults create and control all student profiles and enter the information stored for each child. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children, and we do not let children create accounts on their own. If you believe a child has submitted information to us without adult involvement, please contact us so we can delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will be reflected in the app or communicated to account holders where appropriate.

Governing law

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the United States.
